The eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. All eight teams were automatically qualified for the quarter-finals, so the preliminary round was only a placement round .

There were no second legs in the final round. The winner, who was determined according to the rules of the National Hockey League , went straight to the next round. In contrast to the first event, the final was decided in just one game.
