Career
Fredrik Modin comes from the offspring of the Swedish club Njurunda SK . As a junior he moved to Timrå IK . This then second division team cooperated with IF Sundsvall between 1990 and 1994 . For this syndicate, Modin played his first games in Sweden's second division in 1992. Until the summer of 1994 he played for Sundsvall / Timrå and was selected in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League in 64th place. However, he stayed in his home country and moved to Brynäs IF in the Elitserien .
After he had contested the 1996 World Cup , the Maple Leafs brought to Toronto and he played 76 NHL games as a rookie . In the following two years he was able to increase his points, but the high expectations the Maple Leafs had of him, because they had hoped for a second Mats Sundin . Therefore, he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 1, 1999 in exchange for Cory Cross and a draft pick . In Tampa he was able to improve his offensive game significantly and was the Lightning's top scorer in the 2000/01 season with 32 goals. Modin was at his best three years later : he scored 29 goals and 28 assists in the regular season and was one of the key players in winning the Stanley Cup in the final against the Calgary Flames , with eight goals and 11 assists in 23 playoff games .
During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Modin played again for his home club Timrå IK, which now played in the Elitserien. For the new season, however, he returned to Tampa and was able to repeat his performance from the Stanley Cup season. However, the Lightning lost as defending champion in the first round against the Ottawa Senators , so that the management of the Lightning decided to make changes in the squad. In the search for a new goalkeeper, Marc Denis was ultimately signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Modin and Fredrik Norrena were handed over to the Blue Jackets in return .
On March 3, 2010, it was given to the Los Angeles Kings during the trade deadline . In September 2010 Modin signed a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent . This gave him in late February 2011 in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the Calgary Flames . The Swede played four more games for Calgary and announced his retirement in May 2011.
In the 2013/14 season, Modin played another game for his home club Njurunda SK in fourth-class Division 2, before moving to the Columbus Blue Jackets team in summer 2015.
International
Modin represented his home country for the first time at the Junior World Championship in 1994 and won the silver medal, and he also played in the 1996 , 1998 , 2000 and 2001 men's World Championship. He won the gold medal in 1998 and bronze in 2001. At the World Cup of Hockey 2004 he was in the squad of the Swedish national team and scored the most points of all players in the tournament. Two years later at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , the Swedish national team also won gold with Modin. With the Stanley Cup won in 2004, the Swede was accepted into the Triple Gold Club .
