Career

Marc Denis began his career in 1994 in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens . With them he played in 1997 for the Memorial Cup , the most important ice hockey trophy in Canadian junior ice hockey. In 1996 he received the Marcel Robert Trophy as the QMJHL player who best combined athletic and academic success and the Jacques Plante Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the QMJHL. In 1997 he was also named the best goalkeeper in the Canadian Hockey League and best goalkeeper in the Junior World Championship.

As early as 1995 he was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL Entry Draft in 1995 selected in the first round at position 25 and became the first player to the Avalanche after moving from Quebec chose in draft to Denver. Parallel to his assignments in the QMJHL, he completed his first NHL game in the 1996/97 season .

The next two years he played for the Colorado farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the AHL . In the 1999/2000 season he was the reserve goalkeeper for Colorado behind his idol Patrick Roy . In June 2000 he was transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets , where he played the next season as a substitute goalkeeper behind Ron Tugnutt .

In the following years Denis was able to assert himself as number one in Columbus, but never reached the playoffs . In 2004 he became world champion with the Canadian national team .

After his contract expired in summer 2006, he decided to change teams. Denis signed a three-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning . He started as the clear number one in the 2006/07 season , but poor performance meant that he later had to share the post as regular goalkeeper with Johan Holmqvist . The Lightning qualified for the playoffs in the end, but Denis had made only a small contribution with 17 wins compared to 18 defeats. Since coach John Tortorella apparently no longer had confidence in him, he was removed from the squad at the beginning of the playoffs and replaced by the inexperienced Karri Rämö .

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season Denis was back in the Lightning squad, but was only number two behind Holmqvist and could not convince with good performances in the first three months. At the end of December 2007 he was finally put on the waiver list and when he was not signed by any other NHL team, sent to the farm team, the Norfolk Admirals , in the AHL. The following season Denis spent mainly with the Hamilton Bulldogs and held the position of goalkeeper there. Before he ended his playing career in the summer of 2009, he completed one more encounter in the NHL for the Montréal Canadiens . In the 2010/11 season, the Canadian took over the duties of goalkeeping coach at the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.

Since 2011, Denis has been working as a commentator and analyst for the French-speaking Canadian television broadcaster Réseau des sports , where, among other things, he comments on the games of the Montréal Canadiens.
