Karri Rämö (born July 1, 1986 in Asikkala ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with HK Awangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League . Furthermore, Rämö acted as general manager of the Finnish Mestis club Peliitat Heinola from 2011 to 2013 .
Career
Rämö played for Kiekkoreipas during his junior years before moving to Pelicans Lahti in summer 2003 . For this he was active in the SM-liiga from 2003 to 2005 . At first he was only the third goalkeeper behind Mikko Rämö and Carl Grahn , but received the regular place in the 2004/05 season in front of Pasi Nurminen and Jaakko Suomalainen . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the sixth round as a total of 191st player from the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League . Before they signed him, however, the keeper moved to HPK Hämeenlinna within the SM-liiga before the 2005/06 season . At Hämeenlinna, Rämo again acted as a substitute behind Miika Wiikman and became Finnish champions for the first time with the team at the end of the season . During the season he was also used in one game for Haukat Järvenpää and three games for the Finnish U20 national team in the second-rate Mestis .
Change to North America
In the summer of 2006, Rämö finally moved to North America after the Lightning had signed him. The season 2006/07 spent the Finn mainly with the Lightning farm team , the Springfield Falcons , in the American Hockey League (AHL) There he brought it in the team with Jonathan Boutin on 45 missions. In the course of the season, Rämö had also made his debut in the NHL for the Lightning. In the 2007/08 season , the Finn finally got a permanent place in the NHL squad as a substitute for Johan Holmqvist . The 2008/09 season was then divided between deployments in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals and in the NHL. For the NHL squad, Tampa had signed two new goalkeepers, Mike Smith and Olaf Kölzig , who were initially assigned to Rämö. Rämö immediately prevailed against Kölzig, but Smith filled the regular place. In the AHL he shared appearances with Mike McKenna and compatriot Riku Helenius .
Success in the KHL
Since Rämö saw no future in the NHL after the 2008/09 season , he moved to HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League in June 2009 , where he - despite a valid contract with the Lightning - signed a contract with a term of two Years signed. At Omsk, the goalkeeper was the unrestricted number 1 from the start and completed 44 out of a possible 54 games in both years. In June 2011 he extended his expiring contract by two years. In the National Hockey League, the Rämö personality remained an issue in transfer deals. His transfer rights were initially given to the Montréal Canadiens on August 17, 2010 in exchange for the young Canadian goalkeeper Cédrick Desjardins . These transferred the same on January 12, 2012 together with Michael Cammalleri and a five- round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in exchange for René Bourque , Patrick Holland and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2013 to the Calgary Flames .
Return to the NHL
In July 2013, Rämö signed a two-year deal worth $ 5.5 million with the Calgary Flames. This was extended by one year in July 2015. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, he could not build on his good performance and was used for a game with the farm team ( Stockton Heat ). After returning to the Flames, he got back in shape before suffering a serious knee injury in February 2016. He had surgery on the cruciate ligament and meniscus and was out for at least six months.
Ramö left the Flames in the summer of 2016 and was then allowed to prepare for his return with the Toronto Maple Leafs . In December 2016 he received a professional tryout contract with the Toronto Marlies , for which he was on the ice three times in the AHL. After the Marlies released him at the beginning of February 2017, Rämö returned to his homeland a little later and signed up to the end of the season with the Pelicans Lahti, for which he had already been active from 2003 to 2005.
Again in the KHL
In May 2017 he was signed by Jokerit Helsinki from the Continental Hockey League . At Jokerit he showed excellent performances, especially in the play-offs, and was one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Despite his current contract, he left Jokerit in May 2018 and returned to HK Awangard Omsk, where Bob Hartley , who had already trained him at the Flames, was now head coach. However, due to an ongoing knee injury, he did not play a game for Awangard and did not receive a new contract in 2019.
International
Rämö represented his home country Finland for the first time at the 2004 U18 World Youth Championship . He was only used once as a substitute for Tuukka Rask . The Finns finished in seventh place at the end of the tournament. At the U20 World Junior Championship in 2006 , he was back-up from Rask again and also only played one game. Nevertheless, he won the bronze medal.
In the senior division, Rämö was part of the Finnish squad at the 2008 and 2009 World Championships . At the World Cup in 2008 he won another bronze medal, but remained behind Niklas Bäckström and Petri Vehanen without a start. The following year he made his World Cup debut when he played a game substitute for Pekka Rinne . Finland finished the world championship in fifth place.
He was also part of the Finnish team on the Euro Hockey Tour several times .
