Miika Wiikman (born October 17, 1984 in Mariestad ) is a Swedish - Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League since 2015 .

Career

Miika Wiikman began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of HV71 , where he was active until 2003. For the 2003/04 season , the goalkeeper moved to Hermes Kokkola , for whose professional team he ran this season in the Mestis , the second Finnish division. He also played four games in parallel for the Finnish U20 national team , which also took part in the Mestis' game as a visiting team. In the same year he was also named Mestis Rookie of the Year . From 2004 to 2007 he played for HPK Hämeenlinna , which he led as a regular goalkeeper in the 2005/06 season to win the Finnish championship . Especially in the playoffs he was able to convince, whereupon he received the Jari Kurri trophy as the best player in the SM-liiga playoffs.

From 2007 to 2010 Wiikman was under contract with the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League and during this period played for their farm teams Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League and Charlotte Checkers from the ECHL . With the New York Rangers he won the 2008 Victoria Cup . In March 2010, the Swede with a Finnish passport was transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes within the NHL , but played exclusively for their AHL farm team San Antonio Rampage until the end of the 2009/10 season . He started the 2010/11 season with Lukko Rauma in the SM-liiga before moving to Ilves Tampere in December 2010 within the Finnish top division .

During the 2012/13 season, Wiikman was loaned to Kärpät Oulu and later to SaiPa . After the end of the season, his expiring contract was not extended. In the following two years he played briefly for a total of seven different clubs before joining the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2015 . With the Panthers he won the EIHL playoffs in 2016. In the following year he won the IIHF Continental Cup , to which he made a significant contribution as the best goalkeeper in the competition.

International

In the junior division, Wiikman first played for Sweden , for whose U16 to U19 juniors he was used in friendly matches. In the senior sector he was in Finland's 2006 squad for the Euro Hockey Tour , but was not used as a substitute goalkeeper.
