The Charlotte Checkers were an American ice hockey team from Charlotte, North Carolina that belonged to the ECHL from 1993 to 2010 . A team of the same name has been playing in the American Hockey League since the 2010/11 season .
history
The team was founded in 1993 and played in the cricket arena until 2005 and then in the Time Warner Cable Arena , where the audience record was also achieved. On February 10, 2007, 11,237 spectators followed the home game against the Texas Wildcatters .
Even though the team was only founded in 1993, there was already ice hockey in Charlotte in 1956. The Baltimore Clippers had to look for a new venue after a fire in their arena and found it in North Carolina. The games were played at the Charlotte Coliseum (now the Cricket Arena ) for the remainder of the season. After the season, the team decided to stay in Charlotte and in 1960 they nicknamed themselves Checkers . In 1973 they joined the Southern Hockey League, where they played until the league was closed in 1977.
From 1993 to 1998 John Marks was the head coach behind the gang and qualified with the team five times in a row for the play-offs. After the team failed twice against the Greensboro Monarchs in the first playoff round in the first two seasons after a positive record in the regular season , followed in the 1995/96 season after victories against the Roanoke Express , South Carolina Stingrays , Tallahassee Tiger Sharks and Jacksonville Lizard Kings winning the Riley Cup . Goalkeeper Nick Vitucci was named the Riley Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player for the finals .
On February 10, 2010, the franchise owner Michael Kahn announced that he had successfully acquired the AHL franchise Albany River Rats . With the start of the 2010/11 season , the Checkers took the place of the River Rats in the American Hockey League. The background to the acquisition was that the River Rats do not make a profit with their settlement in the state of New York and the state of North Carolina is considered a more lucrative market for the team in this regard.
