The Greenville Grrrowl were an American ice hockey franchise based in Greenville , South Carolina . The venue for the Grrrowl was the BI-LO Center .
history
The franchise was founded in 1998 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . Head coach was John Marks , who played in his playing career in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks. In their first season, the Grrrowl missed the play-offs and finished last in the Southeast Division. In the following season the team achieved a record for the franchise with 98 points in the regular season and easily reached the play-offs. After the Mobile Mysticks were defeated, Greensville failed in the Conference Finals against the Louisiana IceGators . The following two seasons were marked by very different successes, while the Grrrowl just missed the playoffs in the 2000/01 season, they achieved a greater success a year later by winning the Southeast Division. In the playoffs, the Grrrowl successively defeated the Florida Everblades , Pee Dee Pride and Mississippi Sea Wolves and made it into the finals of the Kelly Cup . With 4-0 wins over the Dayton Bombers , the Grrrowl won the Kelly Cup for the first time. In the following seasons it was not possible to build on this success and the Grrrowl did not get beyond the second round in the play-offs. In June 2006, after no investors were found, the franchise was dissolved due to financial problems.
