The Orlando Solar Bears ( IPA : [ɔrˈlændoʊ 'səʊlə (r) bɛɚs] ) are an American ice hockey franchise of the ECHL from Orlando , Florida and was founded on November 1, 2011.

The home venue is the Amway Center . The Solar Bears cooperated since May 10, 2012 with the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League and the Iowa Wild from the American Hockey League as well as with the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) and the Toronto Marlies (AHL). The Maple Leafs were the Solar Bears' sole cooperation partner from 2014 to 2018 before a new agreement was reached with the Tampa Bay Lightning . Former NHL actor Drake Berehowsky was introduced as the first head coach in franchise history in June 2012 . The Orlando Solar Bears are the third professional ice hockey team in the Greater Orlando area . Under the same name there was a franchise in the International Hockey League in the city from 1994 to 2001 , which was extremely successful during this time and won the Turner Cup , which was awarded for the last time, in the 2000/01 season . In addition, from 2002 to 2007 the Orlando / Florida Seals played in various minor leagues in the south.
