The Dayton Bombers were an American ice hockey franchise based in Dayton , Ohio . Despite their long membership in the ECHL , the bombers were unable to win the Kelly Cup .
history
The franchise was founded in 1991 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . Head coach was Claude Noël , who would later coach the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL. In their first season, the Bombers reached the play-offs, but were subject to the Cincinnati Cyclones in the first round . In the following season, the results improved slightly and Dayton reached the second playoff round, but lost again in three games against the Nashville Knights . In the following years the Bombers reached the play-offs consistently, but never got beyond the second round. In the 1994/95 season, the Bombers achieved 93 points in the regular season, which they barely missed winning the North Division. Dayton also made it to the finals in the following seven seasons, and in the play-offs the Bombers failed again in the second round.
In the 2001/02 season, the Bombers achieved 92 points and won the Northwest Division for the first time. After the Cincinnati Cyclones, Johnstown Chiefs and the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies were defeated in the play-offs , Dayton reached the finals of the Kelly Cup for the first time. After only four games, the Bombers were defeated by the Greenville Grrrowl . After this narrow failure, the team collapsed shortly afterwards and clearly missed the play-offs with a maximum of 58 points in the following four years. The bombers also came in last three times in their division. In the 2006/07 season, the Bombers managed a remarkable increase of 37 points compared to the previous year, which they could win the Northern Division. In the play-offs they defeated the Trenton Titans , Cincinnati Cyclones and Florida Everblades . In the finals of the Kelly Cup, the Ohio team lost five games to the Idaho Steelheads . In their final season in 2008/09, the Dayton Bombers again missed the finals. The franchise was then dissolved due to financial problems.
