Player career
The 1.78 m tall winger began his career with the Victoria Cougars and Prince Albert Raiders in the Canadian Junior League WHL before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft as 80th in the fourth round by the Boston Bruins .
However, the left-handed shooter did not complete a single NHL game for the Bruins, but was only used with the Kalamazoo Wings , a Boston farm team in the International Hockey League , so that he went to AIK Solna in Sweden in 1993 . For the 1994/95 season Penney finally moved to EC VSV in the Austrian ice hockey league . In his first season, the Canadian was both top scorer and top scorer for the entire league season with 73 goals and 39 assists , but then moved to the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the German Ice Hockey League, for which he was on the ice until 1998 .
For the 1998/99 season , the Canadian signed a contract with the DEL record champions Adler Mannheim, with whom he was able to win the championship again in his first season. He repeated this triumph with the Adler in 2001 and then switched back to the Wild Wings. Penney's last DEL station was the Frankfurt Lions in the 2002/03 season , then he played for the Swedish second division HC Borås and again for the EC VSV, where he ended his career in 2005 .
