Competition mode

The 2004/05 season began on September 21, 2004 , and the regular round of 48 games per team ended on March 15, 2005 . The winner of a match received 2 points, in case of a tie both teams received one point. In addition, a 5-minute " Sudden Victory Overtime " was played in which both teams were only allowed to use 4 players. If no goal was scored here either, a penalty shoot-out was played. The final winner received one more point. After the 24th game, the points achieved up to that point were halved (point sharing ).

The four best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, which was held in the best-of-five mode, the 1st and 4th or 2nd and 3rd of the basic round met. The two winners contested a best-of-seven final series in which the Austrian champions were determined.

Transfers

Due to the lockout in the National Hockey League , some of the Austrian teams subsequently strengthened themselves with players from the world's best league. The individual transfers were as follows:

team player
EC KAC Dan Cloutier (goalkeeper, Vancouver Canucks ), Mike Siklenka (defender, Dallas Stars )
EC VSV Reinhard Divis (goalkeeper, St. Louis Blues ), Eric Weinrich (defender, St. Louis Blues ), Jason Krog (striker, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim ), Ethan Moreau (striker, Edmonton Oilers )
HC Innsbruck Brad Isbister (striker, Edmonton Oilers )
EC Red Bull Salzburg Jay Pandolfo (striker, New Jersey Devils ), Marty Reasoner (striker, Edmonton Oilers ), Rob Tallas (goalkeeper, Boston Bruins )

Basic round

After the start of the championship on September 21, HC Innsbruck first took the lead thanks to a few opening wins. The midfield remained close together, only the newcomer to the league from Salzburg did not find the form and was only able to achieve their first victory in the eighth game. In the same round, the EC KAC also took the lead in the standings and was able to gain a large lead over the opponents in the meantime. After about a quarter of the regular round, the EC VSV fell back from the middle field. With several major defeats it gradually became apparent that coach Blair MacDonald was unable to lead the team. The key game took place on October 24, 2004 in Villach, where the Villachers lost after a total of nineteen goals scored 8:11 against the last Salzburg. The club responded and brought the then national team goalkeeper Reinhard Divis to the Drau. More legionnaires followed, and under the leadership of the new coach Greg Holst , who was signed a little later , the team was gradually able to find their game.

At the same time, EC KAC goalkeeper Andrew Verner was injured and had to take a long break with an adductor injury. In goal, the young Hannes Enzenhofer took over , but he was not up to the pressure. Also due to problems in defense, many games were lost, and Enzenhofer became more insecure because of the many defeats. The team reached the lowest point in a game that has become legendary in Vienna, which was lost 6-1, among other things after Enzenhofer had the puck standing to the side of the goal and bounced off the shovel of his racket after a break from the Viennese who were outnumbered. let it slide into the gate. Here, too, there was a reaction and in Dan Cloutier, an NHL experienced goalkeeper was brought in. He was initially still on the bench when Verner reported fit again for four games, but the injury became acute again and Cloutier acted as a regular goalkeeper until the end of the season.

The Capitals, who were initially in the lower half of the table, worked their way up rank by rank. How much the Capitals dominated the second half of the regular season was shown in the statistics: between November 7th and February 18th, only one game (in overtime) was lost. 24 out of 25 games could be won. Only towards the end of the regular season did a short period of weakness follow, but the lead had become so large that the runner-up, EC KAC, was eight points behind the Viennese in the end, despite sharing points.

While the EHC Linz gradually fell back and finally, like Salzburg, could no longer intervene in the fight for the playoff places, in the end Innsbruck, Villach and the Graz 99ers were only two points apart. In the end, the Graz team, although tied with the VSV, missed the playoffs because they lost their last game of the season on their own ice 3: 4 after a penalty shootout against the EC KAC.

Semifinals

Vienna Capitals - EC VSV

The semi-final series between the Vienna Capitals and the EC VSV was decided after only three games. The Villachers had improved towards the end of the regular season, but never found their form. There was a clear class difference in the three games. Although the EC VSV were twice in the lead 1-0 and 2-1 in the first encounter, Bob Wren secured his team victory with a hat trick . Part of the responsibility were also many of the penalties taken by the Villachers in the second section, which allowed the Viennese three hits in numerical superiority.

In the second game too, Bob Wren remained the key to Vienna's success when he again contributed two goals to the win. The Capitals were able to pull away to 3-0 by the 28th minute, while Villach was only dangerous in the power play. The home side only scored two goals in the last ten minutes, but they were unable to equalize. An unsportsmanlike secondary aspect also found its way into the media, as the Villach stewardship service was not up to its task and up to 150 fans of the Capitals had mixed with the Villachers in the meantime. The game had also been postponed for half an hour.

The last game was also dominated by the Capitals: they had been able to play a 3-0 lead by half-time. The game then tipped over for ten minutes, and the Villachers even managed to equalize at the beginning of the final third. But when Mike Craig scored the 4: 3 for the Capitals just a minute later, the VSV could no longer take action. Gregor Baumgartner sealed the end for the Carinthians with a 5: 3.

EC KAC - HC Innsbruck

The series between EC KAC and HC Innsbruck was more exciting and could only be decided in the fifth game. The first game in Klagenfurt was already very close when it was still 4: 4 three minutes before the end after an intermittent catch-up by Innsbruck and only Herbert Ratz and Mike Siklenka were able to secure the victory of the EC KAC with two goals in the last 77 seconds. This continued in the second encounter with alternating goals. This was only decided at the beginning of the final third, when two goals from Innsbruck and one from EC KAC fell within two minutes. The EC KAC could not catch up the narrow deficit, and Innsbruck equalized in the series.

In the third game, Innsbruck showed their morale. After the first third it was 4-0 for the EC KAC, and the game seemed decided. Innsbruck acted very disciplined and finally equalized (after three goals in the last ten minutes). Since no goal was scored in overtime, the EC KAC could only win the match in the penalty shootout.

Innsbruck remained sovereign; With a 5: 3 home win, which had been preceded by a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes, the team equalized to 2-2 in the series. The EC KAC could never have been dangerous in the game and only achieved scoring successes due to the weak performance of the hosts. The defending champion was able to beat the Tyroleans 5-2 in the last game and thus qualify for the final.

final

The final series between the Vienna Capitals and the EC KAC went down in history as one of the most exciting and unusual playoff matches in the Austrian league. The respective away team won six times from the ice. In the first game, the EC KAC took the lead in the ninth minute and only increased to 2-0 eight minutes before the end. The key to success was goalkeeper Dan Cloutier, who was able to save 41 shots and only in the last minute, exactly 43 seconds before the end, allowed the Capitals to hit the next goal and thus correct the result. In the second game the situation was reversed: Mario Schaden was able to score the 1-0 for KAC after 45 seconds, but the Capitals equalized in the fifth minute with Jari Suorsa . In the second third, the guests finally took the lead. The rest of the game remained goalless despite the many penalties and power plays, which meant that the Capitals had regained their home advantage.

The third game turned into a debacle for the Capitals, who had to admit defeat 5-0 at home without a goal, which was their highest home defeat to date. However, they evened out again in the series. A tough game with many hits went into the penalty shootout with a score of 4: 4, where not a single shooter of the EC KAC Capitals goalie Frédéric Chabot was able to defeat, while Cloutier had to admit defeat twice.

In the third game in Vienna, the series stayed true to its laws, the EC KAC won 3-1 again on foreign ice. The game was a reflection of the opening encounter. EC KAC took a 2-0 lead with a double strike at halftime, while the Viennese were only able to score the next goal just before the end of the game. In this game, however, Dan Cloutier was also injured, so the KAC was forced to contest the rest of the series with Andrew Verner, who was not yet fully cured. The fact that he had gained little match practice this season was shown in the sixth encounter. With the Capitals, the away team won again, this time by a clear 5: 1.

For the crucial game in Vienna, Capitals trainer Jim Boni pursued a special psychological tactic: He let his team compete on their own ice with the away addresses and the procedure before the game, including eating together, was carried out according to an away match. The game itself then went ideally for the home team, which after a balanced 1: 1 after the first third in the middle section was able to increase to 5: 1. The EC KAC had nothing to counter this, and after 43 years (the last title came from the WE-V in 1962), the Capitals brought back the championship title to the federal capital.
