During this time, the winger was selected in the third round in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft in 67th place by the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League . In July 1996, the rights to his person passed to the Phoenix Coyotes after the franchise was relocated and renamed.
After the end of the WHL season 1996/97 , the Canadian switched to the professional field and made there with the Springfield Falcons , the farm team of the Coyotes, in the American Hockey League first attempts to gain a foothold there. In the 1997/98 season , the rookie earned a regular place in the Phoenix squad and played a total of 66 games. His second NHL year was less positive, as Isbister was repeatedly thrown back from injuries and he only played 32 games for the Coyotes. In March 1999, they separated from their talent and transferred it to the New York Islanders with a third-round vote in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft . These gave the Czechs Robert Reichel and a third and fourth round vote in the same draft to Phoenix.
Due to his injuries, the winger made his debut for the Islanders in the 1999/2000 season . With 42 scorer points in 64 encounters, he had his best NHL season. It was only when the productivity of the Power Forward declined noticeably that New York decided in March 2003 to let him and Raffi Torres move to the Edmonton Oilers . As compensation, the Islanders received Finnish defender Janne Niinimaa and a second-round vote in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft . The striker stayed with the Oilers until August 2006, but only played a little more than one season and 70 games for the team in his hometown because of the lockout and the associated complete failure of the 2004/05 NHL season . After he had spent parts of the lockout season in Austria at HC Innsbruck , the management of Edmontons sent him for a four-round draft right in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft to the Boston Bruins , where he spent the 2005/06 season.
In August 2006, Isbister joined the reigning Stanley Cup winner Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent on the basis of a one-year contract . There the attacker could not earn a regular place and was deported to the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League. Isbister then requested a transfer in November 2006 and ended up with the New York Rangers in exchange for Jakub Petružálek . After these did not renew his contract, Isbister moved to the Vancouver Canucks for the 2007/08 season and after a year there to the Ottawa Senators . He did not take on the contract signed there in September 2008 and instead moved back to Europe in the following October .
