In the 2004/05 season, the attacker ran for the Ottawa 67’s from the Ontario Hockey League . The 2005/06 season began the right-handed shooter at his ex-club HC Litvínov in the Czech Republic, but ended this in the OHL with the Barrie Colts .

The 2006/07 season began Petružálek with New York's farm teams , the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League and the Charlotte Checkers from the ECHL , before he was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes , for whose AHL farm team Albany River Rats he was active until 2009 was. In addition, the Czech made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Hurricanes in the 2008/09 season , for which he was a template in two games.

On May 15, 2009 Petružálek signed a contract for the 2009/10 season with Lukko Rauma from the Finnish SM-liiga , which was extended in December of the same year to the end of the 2010/11 season. Petružálek completed a total of 131 games for Lukko in the SM-liiga, in which he scored 99 points scorer and led his team to third place in the Finnish championship in 2011. After this success Amur Khabarovsk was committed from the Continental Hockey League .

Between January and April 2013 Petružálek was loaned to HK Dynamo Moscow and won the Gagarin Cup , the championship trophy of the KHL. He then returned to Amur and completed another 38 KHL games for the club before he was given up on December 30, 2013 in exchange for compensation to Ak Bars Kazan . Petružálek had previously complained to the KHL league management about Amur because of unreliable salary payments. For Kazan he had 3 points scorer in 16 KHL games by the end of the season.

On May 28, 2014, Petružálek signed a one-year contract with his fourth KHL club, Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg . After 23 games in which he had collected 4 goals and 12 assists, he asked for an immediate contract termination and returned to Litvínov. The background to this sudden return was the death of his girlfriend Kateřina Netolická on November 12, 2014.

On November 26, 2014, he received a contract with his home club until the end of the season.
