The 1976/77 season of hockey league as the preseason played in one group each South and North. ERC Freiburg , who lost only one game in the entire season , became champions and direct promoters to the 2nd Bundesliga . In contrast, the second EHC Essen failed in the relegation played for the first time against the penultimate of the 2nd division, SG Nuremberg .

mode

The group south played a single round with twelve participants. Then the first six of the preliminary round played a championship round and the last six played a relegation round, each taking the points from the preliminary round.

The group north first played a preliminary round with ten participants, then the first six of the preliminary round played a final round taking the points from the preliminary round. The last four of the preliminary round played together with the first of the Regionalliga Nord and the first four of the Regionalliga West a qualifying round for the Oberliga 1977/78 .

Finally, the first and second of the groups North and South played in a single round for the league championship. The champion was promoted directly to the 2nd Bundesliga , the second played in a return match against the penultimate of the 2nd Bundesliga for promotion.

The Essen EC, which was only founded in the previous year, was dissolved and the newly founded EHC Essen took its place. The Neusser SC was promoted from the regional league. Otherwise the field of participants was identical to the previous year.

A game was not played.

The GSV Moers renounced the promotion to the league. But the Grefrather EC remained in the Oberliga Nord, which had not participated in the qualifying round.

Oberliga Süd

Attendees

Due to the short-term increase in the 2nd Bundesliga, EV Landsberg and EHC 70 Munich were promoted to the 2nd division and TSV Straubing remained in the 2nd division. The champions of the Regionalliga Süd SC Reichersbeuern renounced the promotion. The ice hockey department of the Münchner EV joined the EHC 70 Munich. As a result, the athletic relegated VER Selb remained in the upper league and the teams in places 2 to 4 of the Regionalliga Süd 1975/76 rose to the upper league: Schwenningen, Geretsried and Sonthofen.

Relegation

VER Selb - Deggendorfer SC 6: 6; 7: 8

The Deggendorfer SC rose to the Oberliga Süd. The VER Selb was the second sporting relegation in the regional league, but moved back to the top league for SC Reichersbeuern, who did not want to go up.
