The 1976/77 season of the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey was the fourth season of the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . Since the master ESV Kaufbeuren renounced the promotion to the top division, the promotion right was then exercised by the second placed EC Deilinghofen .

The TEV Miesbach had to relegate to the league as the last of the relegation group and was replaced by the ERC Freiburg . The penultimate, SG Nürnberg , won the relegation against EHC Essen and stayed in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Similar to the Bundesliga, the mode was changed compared to the previous year. First, the twelve participating teams played a single round, after which the first six qualified for the championship group. In this, the champions and promoted to the Bundesliga were determined in a double round. The six last-placed clubs in the preliminary round played in the relegation group, also in a double round, to stay up. The points from the preliminary round were taken into the respective final round. While the last placed in the relegation group was relegated directly to the league, the penultimate had to defend his place in the 2nd Bundesliga in a relegation game against the second in the league promotion round.
