The 1978/79 season of the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga was the sixth season of the second-highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . Since the EC Peiting suspended the game for one season, the season started with only eleven teams. Both the champions Duisburger SC and the second-placed ERC Freiburg rose directly to the Bundesliga, their places were taken by the first division relegated Augsburger EV and ESV Kaufbeuren . The last-placed EV Pfronten , however, had to relegate to the league .

At the end of the preseason, it was decided at short notice to increase the Bundesliga from ten to twelve teams. In addition, the Bundesliga club Krefelder EV went bankrupt. As a result, the sporting relegated EC Deilinghofen remained in the Bundesliga and three second division teams were promoted to the Bundesliga.
The EC Peiting withdrew to the league. The athletic relegated EHC 70 Munich therefore remained in the league and all four participants in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga of the previous year moved up to the 2nd Bundesliga.

In contrast to the previous year, the 2nd Bundesliga was played again in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. Champion and runner-up directly in the Bundesliga , while the last placed into the league were relegated.
