The 1964/65 season of the ice hockey league was the seventh season of the league as the second highest German ice hockey division under the Bundesliga . Due to the increase in the Bundesliga for the following season , both champions Preussen Krefeld and the runner-up, Düsseldorfer EG , rose directly to the first division. The third-placed VfL Bad Nauheim won the relegation against the bottom of the Bundesliga, TuS Eintracht Dortmund , and also rose to the top division.
The last place in the league, Eintracht Frankfurt , won the relegation against the third in the group league , the Cologne EK , and thus remained in the league. Masters and runners-up in the third division, EV Rosenheim and EC Deilinghofen , were promoted straight to the top division.

As in the previous year, the participating teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. Since the Bundesliga was increased to ten teams for the following season , both the champions and the runner-up rose directly to the first division. At the end of the season, the third had the chance to advance to the top division in a relegation round against the bottom of the Bundesliga . The last placed, however, had to play in a relegation round against the third placed in the group league for his place in the top division, while the first two of the third division also rose directly.
