Junior Ice Hockey World Championship 1997
The games of the 21st Junior A World Championship in 1997 took place from December 26, 1996 to January 4, 1997 in Geneva and Morges , Switzerland . The B group was played in Kiev , Ukraine , the C group in Gheorgheni and Miercurea Ciuc , Romania and the D group in Sofia , Bulgaria .
A total of 34 teams took part in these Junior World Championships. Canada became world champions for the tenth time (and for the fifth time in a row) ahead of the United States and Russia . The Switzerland finished seventh, while the young German with a 7: 0 win in the decisive match against relegated Poland reached the saving ninth. Austria took fifth place in the C group and thus missed the immediate return to the B group after relegating in the previous year.

The U20-A World Championship was held from December 26, 1996 to January 4, 1997 in Switzerland at two venues - Geneva and Morges . The game was played in the Geneva ice rink Les Vernets (6,837 places) and in the Patinoire des Eaux-Minérales in Morges with 2,400 places. A total of 31,336 spectators attended the 31 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,011 per game.
Ten national teams took part in the tournament and played in two groups of five teams each during the preliminary round.
mode
Male players under the age of 20 (U-20) were allowed. Ten teams took part, divided into two groups of five teams each. Each team played once against each group opponent. Then played the last two of the two groups in the relegation round from the only relegated in the B World Championship. The three best teams per group played the world championship title in the play-offs, with the two group winners receiving a bye for the semifinals.
