history

David Longstaff , here in the Guildford Flames jersey, took part with the British team in the U20-C World Championships in 1993 and 1994 .

The British U20 national ice hockey team was founded in the run-up to the 1984 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship . In her first World Cup participation, she was sixth out of eight teams in Group C. Until the changeover to the current division system after the 2000 World Cup, the British remained in Group C, then from 2001 they played in Division II, which was also third-class. It was not until the 2004 World Cup that the team from the island was promoted to Division I for the first time However, despite the home advantage at the tournament in Sheffield next year, they could not hold on there. In the years that followed, the British juniors developed into an elevator team that repeatedly commuted between Divisions I and II. Only from 2011 to 2014 did the British play four times in a row in Division I, but were then transferred to Division II as a penalty after the use of defender Adam Jones who was not eligible to play . After the immediate rise in 2015, the team was relegated to Division II in 2017, where the team has been competing again since the 2018 World Cup .

Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the World Championships, while the U19 national team took part in the Junior European Championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the U20 national team of Great Britain has exclusively represented the U20 junior level at world championships. It only represents the area of the British main island. Northern Ireland is traditionally represented by the Irish Federation and its teams.

In order to give the British youngsters more game practice, the team played in the English Premier Ice Hockey League from 2000 to 2003 .
