history

The US boys at the U20 World Cup 2006

The US national U20 ice hockey team was founded in 1974 on the occasion of the first unofficial hosting of a junior world championship . Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the world championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the US U20 national team has only represented the U20 junior level at world championships.

The US U20 national team is one of the strongest in the world and is ranked fourth in the all-time medal table following the 2018 U20 World Cup with three world championship titles, one silver and six bronze medals. At first, however, the Americans could only achieve places in the midfield. The first bronze medal was won in 1986 and the first runner-up title in 1997. When they took part in the 30th World Cup (in 1976 the US boys did without the tournament in Finland) in 2004 , they finally won their first title, which was followed by further successes in 2010 , 2013 and 2017 .
