On July 4, 2011 Sterling signed a two-way contract for one year with the St. Louis Blues and was subsequently mostly used with the Peoria Rivermen and at the end of the season with the Portland Pirates in the AHL. After the end of the season he received an AHL contract with the Chicago Wolves , before he moved to Europe for the first time in the summer of 2013 and was signed by HV71 Jönköping from the Svenska Hockeyligan .
Between June 2014 and the end of the 2015/16 season he was under contract with EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League and was Austrian champion in 2015 and 2016 . With 192 penalty minutes, he was the player with the most penalty minutes in the league in 2016.
