Luke Kunin (born December 4, 1997 in Chesterfield , Missouri ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League since March 2017 and plays for there on the position of the center .
Career
Luke Kunin was born in Chesterfield, a suburb of St. Louis , where he played for the St. Louis AAA Blues in his youth . For the 2013/14 season he moved to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US hockey association USA Hockey . For their junior selections, the center took part in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the country's highest junior league. At the same time, the NTDP teams act as junior national teams, so that Kunin won gold medals with the U17 and U18 teams at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in January 2014 and at the U18 World Championship in 2015 . He also took over the captaincy of the U18 team in the 2014/15 season .
In 2015 Kunin retired from the NTDP due to old age and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , for whose ice hockey team, the Badgers , he took part in the Big Ten Conference , a conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As a freshman , the center forward scored 32 points in 34 games and was consequently appointed to the Big Ten All-Rookie Team . Then chose him Minnesota Wild in the NHL Entry Draft in 2016 to 15th position. For the time being, however, the American returned to Wisconsin for another season, during which he acted as team captain for the Badgers and the US U20 national team, with which he won the gold medal at the 2017 U20 World Cup .
After his second season of college, in which he was elected to the Big Ten Second All-Star Team , Kunin signed an entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild in March 2017 . This sent him to the Iowa Wild , their farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), where he subsequently made his professional debut. A few game days after the start of the 2017/18 season, Kunin was finally appointed to the Minnesota Wild squad for the first time and thus made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2017 . This was followed by regular changes between Minnesota and Iowa before he finally established himself in the NHL for the 2019/20 season.
