Mathew "Matt" Dumba (born July 25, 1994 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League since July 2012 . With the Canadian national team , the defender won the gold medal at the 2016 World Cup .
Career
youth
Matt Dumba has Filipino (maternal) as well as Romanian and German (paternal) roots. Born in Regina, he moved with his family to Calgary , Alberta at the age of eight , where he was trained primarily by his father when he was young. He later played for the Calgary Bronks and attended the Edge School for Athletes , a sports school near Calgary. 2009 was selected in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in fourth position by the Red Deer Rebels and made his debut in the team at the end of the 2009/10 season. At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, the defender was firmly in the Rebels' squad and scored 26 points in 62 games as well as plus / minus statistics of +24. With these achievements he was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the WHL at the end of the season . In addition, Dumba took part with the Canada Pacific team in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 and won the bronze medal there, where he was the top scorer of the tournament with 12 points. In May 2011, HK Vitjas selected him in 60th position in the KHL Junior Draft 2011 , before winning the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 a few months later .
In the following season 2011/12 he increased his personal statistics significantly to 57 points from 69 games and took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2012 because he had missed the playoffs with the Rebels . He led the team as captain that won the bronze medal at the end of the World Cup. Dumba was voted top scorer again with 12 points and also the best defender of the tournament. For the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2012 , the Central Scouting Service rated him in 11th position among the North American outfield players before he was selected seventh in the actual draft by the Minnesota Wild . With the Wild, he directly signed a three-year entry contract and then returned to Red Deer in the WHL. There he did not quite achieve the performances from the previous season in the 2012/13 season, before he was appointed to the Houston Eros , the farm team of the Wild from the American Hockey League (AHL), and subsequently made his professional debut.
Minnesota Wild
As a result, the defender completed the pre-season with the Minnesota Wild and established himself in the NHL squad. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, he made his first 13 appearances in the National Hockey League (NHL) before traveling to the 2014 U20 World Cup with the Canadian U20 national team . There the team finished fourth and Dumba did not return to the NHL, but to the WHL, but to the Portland Winterhawks ; they had signed him in December 2013 in exchange for Presten Kopeck from the Red Deer Rebels. With the Winterhawks he reached the playoff finals , but lost to the Edmonton Oil Kings .
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Dumba commuted regularly between the NHL and the Wild's new farm team, the Iowa Wild . In Iowa, he completed 20 games and was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic , before he finally established himself in the NHL squad of the Minnesota Wild in the middle of the season. In total, he came to 58 missions in which he scored 16 points scorer. After the 2015/16 season, Dumba made his debut for Team Canada at the 2016 World Cup and won the gold medal there.
In the 2017/18 season, Dumba achieved by far his best offensive performance to date with 50 scorer points and then signed a new five-year contract in Minnesota in July 2018, which should bring him an average annual salary of six million US dollars.
