Career
Joel Eriksson Ek was born into an ice hockey family in Karlstad, so his father Clas Eriksson has spent almost his entire career as a player and coach at Färjestad BK from his hometown. In this respect, Joel Eriksson Ek - just like his younger brother Olle (* 1999) after him - also went through the Färjestad BK's junior departments in his youth. For his U20 he made his debut in the 2013/14 season in the J20 SuperElit , Sweden's highest junior league, before scoring 32 points in 25 games the following year . With these achievements, the center forward recommended himself not only for the men's selection of his home club, for which he subsequently came to 34 games in the Svenska Hockey League , but also for the scouts of the National Hockey League (NHL), who put him in the draft Ranking lists unanimously acted as a first-round pick. In the actual NHL Entry Draft 2015 , the Swede was selected in 20th position by the Minnesota Wild and given an entry contract in July 2015 .
For the time being, however, Eriksson Ek returned to Färjestad BK on loan and spent the 2015/16 season there, in which the attacker scored nine goals and six assists in 41 games. Subsequently, he was also considered in the KHL Junior Draft 2016 and was selected in 95th position by HK Sibir Novosibirsk . In summer 2016, the attacker finally joined the organization of the Wild and made his debut in the NHL in October 2016, where he scored his first goal in the top division of North America. After nine missions and five scorer points, the Wild handed him over to his hometown club Färjestad BK for the rest of the season in November 2016 in order to allow him to continue playing. After the end of the season in Sweden, the attacker returned to the wild and came in the regular season and playoffs on another 9 NHL appearances.
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, the Swede established himself in the Wild's NHL squad and from then on he was only used sporadically in the AHL.
International
In 2014 he took part in major tournaments with Sweden's youth national teams for the first time when he represented his home country at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament . He was also part of the Tre Kronor at the U18 World Championship in 2015 , the U20 World Championship in 2016 and the U20 World Championship in 2017 , but missed the medal ranks with the team.
During the 2016/17 season Eriksson Ek made his debut for Sweden's senior team on the Euro Hockey Tour and was also part of their squad at the 2017 World Cup , where he won the gold medal with the team.
