Ryan Donato (born April 9, 1996 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League since February 2019 and plays for them on the position of the center . He also represented the United States national team at the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Career

Ryan Donato was born in Boston when his father Ted Donato was there for the Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). In his youth he attended the Dexter School , a private school in Brookline , for whose ice hockey team the attacker played in the regional high school league from 2011 to 2015 . In addition, he was occasionally used in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , the central talent factory of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey , without being able to establish himself there permanently. In the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , the Boston Bruins selected him in 56th position, making him the highest-drafted high school player of that draft year. In the 2014/15 season he also played for the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the country's highest junior league.

In the fall of 2015, Donato enrolled at Harvard University and began studying sociology there , while at the same time participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the Harvard Crimson in ECAC Hockey . There he was trained by his father, who has been the team's head coach since 2004. The center also established itself as a regular scorer at Harvard, with 40 scorer points in 36 games in the 2016/17 season , won the ECAC championship with the Crimson and was appointed to the Second All-Star Team . In addition, the attacker was nominated as one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which honors the best college player in the country; this was won by Adam Gaudette . On March 19, 2018 it was announced that Donato had signed an entry-level contract with the Bruins for two years. On the same day he made his NHL debut in the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets , where he got one goal and two assists.

In the end, Donato only spent eleven months in the Bruins franchise and played several games for the Providence Bruins farm team in the American Hockey League during the 2018/19 season . In February 2019, the organization transferred him to the Minnesota Wild along with a conditional five-round suffrage in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft , which can become a four-round pick if Boston reaches the second round of the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs . In return, they gave Charlie Coyle to Beantown .

International

Donato made his international debut at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , winning the bronze medal with the U20 national team . At the end of December 2017, it was announced that Donato would be part of the US squad at the 2018 Winter Olympics . He benefited from the decision of the National Hockey League not to interrupt the season for this Olympiad and thus ban their players from participating. He hadn't yet signed a contract with the Boston Bruins and was one of four college players on the team. In Pyeongchang, the team finally finished seventh, with Donato, together with Ilya Kovalchuk and Kirill Kaprisow, the top scorer of the tournament with five goals.
