Career

Donato spent his junior career at Harvard University after graduating from high school . After high school he was selected in the fifth round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in 98th place by the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League . At Harvard he played between 1987 and 1991 in the ice hockey program of the elite university in the ECAC Hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In 1989 he won the national championship with the team. He himself was named the best player of the final tournament. For the 1991/92 season, the striker was recruited by the US Ice Hockey Federation to prepare intensively for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , France .

After completing the Winter Games, Donato finally joined the Boston Bruins, for whom he played until November 1998, before moving to the New York Islanders in exchange for Ken Belanger . With the move to the Islanders, Donato began his journey through the NHL, as he joined the Ottawa Senators in March 1999 . From there he was transferred in June with the negotiating rights of Antti-Jussi Niemi to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , who received goalkeeper Patrick Lalime in return . After a year with the Californians, the latter did not extend his expiring contract in the summer of 2000, so that he initially moved to the Dallas Stars as a free agent for a year .

At the beginning of the 2001/02 season , the winger could not find a new employer and was only signed in January 2002 by an ex-club New York Islanders. Between the end of January and mid-March 2002, he landed on the waiver list with the Los Angeles Kings , St. Louis Blues and then again Los Angeles. This put him until the end of the season in the American Hockey League with the Manchester Monarchs . In the 2002/03 season , Donato joined the New York Rangers before returning to the Boston Bruins in the 2003/04 season , where he ended his career in June 2004.

Donato has been the head coach of the ice hockey program of his alma mater , Harvard University, since summer 2004 .
