Antti-Jussi Jormanpoika Niemi (born September 22, 1977 in Vantaa ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was last under contract with his former training club Jokerit in the Liiga in the 2013/14 season .
Career
Niemi began his career in the offspring of the Finnish first division club Jokerit , where he was active in the junior team from the 1991/92 season. Five years later, in the 1995/96 season , he made his first appearances in the professional team. During the NHL Entry Draft 1996 he was selected in the fourth round in a total of 81st place by those responsible for the Ottawa Senators . However, the defender stayed in Finland and won the Finnish championship with Jokerit in 1996 and 1997 . It was not until the summer of 2000 that he decided to move to North America. There he signed the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . After he was used in the two years in Anaheim , mostly with the farm team , the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , in the American Hockey League and only wore the Ducks jersey 29 times in the NHL , he forced a move back to Europe in 2002.
Another year followed at Jokerit, for which he worked in the professional field between 1995 and 2000, before he moved to Sweden for the 2003/04 season in the Elitserien at Frölunda HC . There the defensive player was one of the top performers in the team and also had positive plus / minus statistics. In the 2004/05 season , in which he won the Swedish championship with Frölunda , he had a plus / minus statistics of +18. This was the best value in his professional career so far. Niemi was under contract with the Swedes until the end of the 2007/08 season . He then received a lucrative offer from the newly founded Continental Hockey League from HK Lada Tolyatti in the summer of 2008, which he accepted and went on the ice for the Russians in the 2008/09 season. After a short-term engagement with the Swedish second division club Leksands IF , Niemi moved to Jokerit for the 2009/10 season, where he played until 2014. At the end of the same year, Niemi finally announced his official end of career as an active player after almost 20 years as a professional.
International
Niemi was nominated for the first time for a Finnish junior national team for the U18 junior European championship in 1995 and completed 18 games for the junior team and 70 games for the A team of the Finns in the following 13 years. During this time he was able to win the silver medal with Finland at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin .
