Zachary "Zach" Justin Parise (born July 28, 1984 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League since July 2012 . Previously had left winger eight years with the New Jersey Devils active, with whom he 2012 the final of the Stanley Cup reached and the team here as captain led. With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics . His father Jean-Paul Parisé and older brother Jordan Parise were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Beginnings in junior and college areas
Parise first played for the Shattuck St. Mary’s ice hockey team in the United States' high school league system from 2000 to 2002 . He then stood for two seasons for the University of North Dakota ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the ice. Parise made a name for himself by performing well and was selected 17th in the first round by the New Jersey Devils in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft . He stayed in North Dakota for another year and won gold with the US team at the 2004 U20 World Junior Championship .
New Jersey Devils (2004-2012)
In 2004 the Devils brought him to their farm team at the Albany River Rats in the AHL , as the NHL season was canceled due to strike. From the 2005/06 season he played in the NHL for New Jersey, where he immediately scored the first goal in the jersey of the Devils on his debut in the NHL. After a solid first season, Parise was able to increase its performance significantly in the following season and already exceeded its previous year's statistics of 32 scorer points halfway through the season, whereupon his contract was extended by four years in August 2007. In addition, the American was also nominated for the YoungStars Game at the 55th National Hockey League All-Star Game, where he was named MVP .
For the 2008/09 season Parise was appointed assistant captain of the team and was the most successful scorer of the Devil with 45 goals and 94 points in the regular season and took fifth place in the league's scorer list. In recognition of his performance, the left-handed shooter received the Devils Most Valuable Player Award and an All-Star Game 2009 nomination . The following season was less successful for the attacker in personal terms, despite good scorer values, he experienced a low performance in the meantime with 12 consecutive games without goal participation. Nevertheless, after the elimination of the Devils in the first play-off round , Parise was voted the most valuable player of his team for the second time in a row.
In November 2010, Parise underwent meniscus surgery and initially threatened to be out for the remainder of the 2010/11 season , but was able to intervene again in active play in April 2011 due to a good healing process. In the summer of 2011, Parise and the Devils agreed on a one-year contract extension, and he was appointed new team captain for the 2011/12 season . In this role, the American was instrumental in the successful season of the Devils and led the team to the final of the Stanley Cup, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings .
Minnesota Wild (since 2012)
After Parise had post-season unrestricted free agent status, he signed a 13-year contract with the Minnesota Wild in the summer of 2012 and was immediately named one of the team's assistant captains. In the 2012/13 season shortened by the lockout , the American was the most attacking player in the Wild with 38 points, but could not prevent the team from being eliminated in the first round of the play-offs against the Chicago Blackhawks . In March 2014 Parise returned with the Wild for the first time to his previous place of work in New Jersey and was booed in the game against the Devils every time the puck was touched.
In February 2020, Parise played his 1,000th regular season game in the NHL.
International
Parise made his international debut at the 2002 U18 World Championships and won gold with the US national team. In 2004 he was in the squad for the U20 World Cup and scored a total of five goals and six assists when his team won the tournament, which earned him the awards as the most valuable player in the competition. At the 2005 World Cup , the attacker played for the senior national team for the first time, but was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic .
In 2010 Parise was in the squad for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and acted as an assistant captain of the team. After scoring both goals in the 2-0 win against Switzerland in the quarter-finals, he made it 2-2 in the final against Canada 20 seconds before the end of regular time. In extra time, however, they lost to a goal from Sidney Crosby and could only win the silver medal. Parise was named team captain for the 2014 Winter Olympics and finished fourth with the US team after losing the game for third place to Finland .
Parise was also part of Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but was eliminated with the team in the group stage.
