Bahia Honda Key is one of the lower islands in the Florida Keys chain . It lies in the series of Keys exactly between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key . It is also near the more famous town of Marathon and not far from the western end of the Seven Mile Bridge .
At the 2000 census, the island had 67 inhabitants.
Bahia Honda State Park
Most of the uninhabited island is covered by the 2.1 km² Bahia Honda State Park , which is very popular with tourists because of its three beaches. The park is open all year round from 8:00 a.m. until sunset.
The island has a rich flora and fauna.
Transport links
Bahia Honda is via the Overseas Highway U.S., known for its many bridges. Highway 1 connected to the mainland.
Former rail link
From the beach you can also see the Bahia Honda Bridge, part of the former Florida East Coast Railway between Homestead and Key West .
The rail link between Homestead and Key West opened in 1912. In 1935 the line was badly damaged by the Labor Day hurricane . As the reconstruction was not considered profitable, the line was closed. Instead, construction of the Overseas Highway began in 1938.
