Surname
The meaning of the name, literally translated from Spanish , is often purple island . The American historian Irving R. Eyster traces the name back to a transport schooner called Island Home , which was previously landed in Plantation Key .
The community of Islamorada is nicknamed the Village of Islands . In addition, the community calls itself the Fishing Capitol of the World (world fishing capital).
history
On the island of Plantation Key in middens (shell midden) found artifacts colonization evidenced by indigenous Americans since at least the 6th century ; Irving R. Eyster gives a two to three thousand year Indian settlement period.
In 1733 a Spanish silver fleet ran aground on the reefs of the archipelago during a hurricane . Since the mid-19th century, families from the Bahamas and New England settled on the islands, growing coconut palms and grapefruit , which were shipped to Baltimore and New York City .
In 1907, the Townsite of Isla Morada was built on Upper Matecumbe Key . In 1908 the first Islamorada Post Office was opened. The name Islamorada gradually carried over to the entire island.
Between 1906 and 1907, when the Overseas Railroad was built, the current island of Windley Key was created from two separate islands called Umbrella Keys. From 1912 the Overseas Railroad connected the archipelago with Key West and Florida. On September 2, 1935, during the Labor Day hurricane, the disastrous Islamorada rail accident occurred . A highway was built on the destroyed track bed , which from 1938 connected the islands again directly with the mainland and Key West.
The Islamorada Congregation was established on November 4, 1997.
