Islamorada railway accident
The Islamorada rail accident was the derailment of a train on the Florida East Coast Railway at Islamorada on September 2, 1935, caused by a hurricane .
Starting position
The main artery for the Florida Keys , which connected the islands to the mainland , was then still the single-track Florida Overseas Railroad .
On September 2, 1935, Labor Day hurricane threatened the Florida Keys . To the then few residents and veterans from the First World War to evacuate that there as part of a government aid program, a new road bridge built between the Upper Keys, a train with 10 was passenger cars from Homestead to the route sent.
the accident
Before reaching the Veterans, the train was hit by the storm surge and washed off the rails.
consequences
It is not known how many of the occupants of the train died in the railway accident . In total, at least 423 people (164 residents and 259 veterans) lost their lives in the Florida Keys hurricane. Even in Flamingo and Cape Sable , at the southwest corner of mainland Florida , were dead bodies washed ashore.
