action
season 1
The Rayburns have run a small hotel in the Florida Keys for 45 years. When his son Danny returns to Islamorada to celebrate the anniversary , old faults break out again. Initially, his siblings, the policeman John, the lawyer Meg and the day-living Kevin, seem to be mainly concerned about the relationship between Danny and their parents.
But they too have some old secrets that upset the peace of the family: As an adolescent, Danny took his little sister Sarah on a boat tour to protect her from their parents' marital disputes. She was killed in a diving accident, for which father Robert made Danny responsible and beat him to the point of hospital. As a result of the abuse, Danny sustains permanent damage to his shoulder. The family is sworn by the returned mother to protect the father from the police and to claim that Danny was so damaged in a car accident.
At present, after the failure of his own restaurant in Miami, Danny wants to return to the family's lap and get involved in running the hotel. The siblings ensure that he is not considered in the will of his father Robert, who dies of a heart attack. He begins to use his parents' hotel as a transshipment point for drug smuggling together with his friend Eric O'Bannon.
Danny exploits the feelings of guilt and insecurity of the other family members and increasingly becomes a threat to the mendacious family idyll. The conflicts come to a head and in the end John kills his brother by drowning him in a duel on the shallow beach.
season 2
The investigation into Danny's death focuses on his partner in drug deals. The family has been publicly exposed since John decided to run for the (electoral) office of county sheriff. The seedy businessman Roy Gilbert supports him. Danny's teenage son Nolan shows up and complicates things further. Marco Diaz, Meg's ex-fiancé and John's employee, tracks down the Rayburns. In an act of desperation, Kevin kills him.
season 3
The family works together to rid Kevin of suspicion that Diaz died. Roy Gilbert, who meanwhile hires Kevin for his drug dealings with Cuba, sends a troubleshooter who gets the idea to blame Eric O'Bannon for the deed. Meg goes into hiding and flees north, while John and Kevin give false evidence in court. The innocent Eric O'Bannon is sentenced to thirty years in prison. As a witness in court, Sally tells the truth about Sarah's death and the Rayburns' initial lies.

reception
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote on March 19, 2015: "What is new, however, is the leisurelyness with which a family drama takes its course, the inevitability with which a catastrophe develops from small untruths and old prejudices".
Juliane Frisse writes for Bayerischer Rundfunk that “you can tell about the series that it was not written for a weekly TV broadcast, but for binge watching ”. Bloodline is more of a long film than a classic series of episodes. She also praises the “spectacular setting” and the “atmospheric story”.
