Tavernier is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monroe County in the US state of Florida with 2136 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The CDP Tavernier is located on Plantation Key Island , which is part of the Florida Keys . It is located on the Overseas Highway ( US 1 , SR 5 ) and is approximately 140 km from Key West and 100 km from Miami .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 2136 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 1922 households. The population density was 314.1 inh / km². 94.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 1.5% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 1.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.7% to several ethnic groups. 29.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 27.7% of all households lived in 22.5% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 58.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.18 people and the average family size was 2.71 people.

17.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 35.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 52.0% of the population were male and 48.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 50,595, with 6.2% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, 81.28% of the population spoke English as their first language and 18.72% spoke Spanish .

Attractions

On June 15, 2006, the El Rubi Shipwreck Site was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places . The shipwreck is part of the 1733 Spanish Plate Fleet Shipwrecks Multiple Property Submission ( MPS )
