Darby Joseph Hendrickson (born August 28, 1972 in Richfield , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach who played 543 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , New York Islanders , Vancouver during his playing career between 1991 and 2007 Canucks , Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. In addition, he played for the US national team five world championships and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway . Since the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Hendrickson has been working as an assistant coach at his former club Minnesota Wild in the NHL.
Career
Hendrickson had a stellar career in high school between 1987 and 1991 that earned him the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award for the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota in his senior year. In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , the striker was selected in the fourth round in 73rd position by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League . He then spent two years at the University of Minnesota with their ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After 55 scorer points in his first year, he secured the award for Rookie of the Year . The following year he secured the division championship with the team.
Thereupon the attacker left the university and switched to the US hockey association USA Hockey for the 1993/94 season . With the selection, he prepared intensively during the year for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Norway , for which he was finally nominated. After the Winter Games, the Olympian switched to the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise . After he had completed his first games in the professional field for their farm team , the St. John's Maple Leafs , in the American Hockey League , he finally made his debut in the play-offs for Toronto in the NHL. He then spent most of the 1994/95 NHL season, which was massively shortened by the lockout, in St. John's, but also got his first scorer point in the course of the eight NHL games for Toronto. In the 1995/96 season Hendrickson ran on more regularly for the Toronto Maple Leafs, before he became part of a transfer deal in mid-March 1996. Together with Sean Haggerty , Kenny Jönsson and the first-round suffrage in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , the American moved to the New York Islanders , who in turn gave up Wendel Clark , Mathieu Schneider and DJ Smith to Toronto. After 16 appearances with the Islanders, the Maple Leafs brought the striker back in the summer of 1997 in exchange for a five-round vote in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft .
Hendrickson then spent three more seasons in the Canadian metropolis and was part of the permanent staff there. In February 1999 he was transferred again from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Chris McAllister . However, he did not feel at home there either. After missions for the Canucks and their AHL farm team Syracuse Crunch during the 1999/2000 game year , the Canucks left him unprotected for the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft , after which he was selected by the newly formed Minnesota Wild . There the center forward spent the following four seasons and, based on his experience, acted as team captain for part of the 2000/01 season . In the same season he also set a career record with 27 scorer points and was one of the most popular players in the early years of the franchise. The 2002/03 season missed Hendrickson largely due to an arm injury, so he only got into the game in the last third of the season. With five scorer points in 17 missions, he played a decisive role in the game's entry into the semifinals in the subsequent play-offs.
The 2003/04 season was sportingly disappointing for the American. During the season he was sent to the Houston Eros farm team . However, to play again in the NHL, he was signed in February 2004 by the Colorado Avalanche . As part of the transfer deal, they also received an eight-round vote in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft . In return, they gave a four-round vote in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to Minnesota. But he did not play more than 26 games for the Denver team .
Due to another lockout in the NHL, which became apparent in autumn 2004, Hendrickson moved to Europe, where he played a few games for the Latvian capital city club HK Riga 2000 in October . He and his former teammate and friend Sergejs Žoltoks had agreed to do this . After the sudden and unexpected death of Žoltoks' on November 3, 2004 during a championship game in the Belarusian capital Minsk , Hendrickson left the team again. For the 2005/06 season the US-American signed up for the Austrian club EC Red Bulls Salzburg . There he let his career in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga , which he ended in the summer of 2007 at the age of 34, end in the following two playing years. He had previously won the Austrian championship title with the Salzburg team .
After a three-year hiatus, Hendrickson returned to the NHL for the 2010/11 season . He was hired as assistant coach by his ex-club Minnesota Wild and worked there under the head coaches Todd Richards , Mike Yeo , John Torchetti and, since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Bruce Boudreau .
International
For his home country Hendrickson played the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Norway , which the Americans finished in eighth place. He also ran at the 1996 , 1997 , 1999 , 2000 and 2001 World Championships . He won the bronze medal at the 1996 World Cup in the Austrian capital Vienna . At major international tournaments, the striker wore the American jersey 46 times and scored 13 points.
