Career

Kenny Jönsson began his professional career in 1991 in the Swedish Elitserien at Rögle BK . In the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round at position 12. But he stayed in Sweden for another year and took part with the Swedish team in the 1994 Winter Olympics and won the gold medal there. In the fall of 1994 he was supposed to make his debut in the National Hockey League , but there was a lockout and the start of the season was finally postponed to January 1995. Until then he continued to play in his homeland.

Jonsson played almost all games in the 1994/95 season for Toronto and was elected to the NHL all-rookie team . In March 1996 he was transferred to the New York Islanders , where he was immediately an integral part of the team. But the following years were pretty unsuccessful. New York missed the playoffs year after year , but Jönsson stayed with the Islanders. In 1999 Kenny Jönsson took over from Trevor Linden, who had switched to the Vancouver Canucks , as captain of the Islanders and denied the season with the letter "C" on his chest.

In the 2001/02 season , the Islanders reached the playoffs for the first time in a long time, but failed in the first round. After all, the Islanders always made it to the finals for the next two years, but they didn't get out of the first round.

The 2004/05 NHL season was canceled due to a lockout . The teams could not agree on new pay modalities with the players and the league. Jönsson returned to Sweden in autumn 2004 and played for his old team Rögle BK in the Swedish second division. He surprised in the summer of 2005 by not going back to the NHL, but at Rögle in the second division in Sweden. He stayed there until the summer of 2009 before ending his career at the age of 34. He then started working as a trainer and was hired by Rögle BK as an assistant trainer for the 2010/11 season. He held this position until 2013 when Rögle BK was relegated from the Elitserien to the Allsvenskan.

Nevertheless, he took part in the Winter Olympics in Turin . Sweden won the gold medal and Kenny Jönsson was named best defender of the tournament. In May he led the Swedish team as captain to win the ice hockey world championship .

Kenny Jönsson was honored with the guldpuck in 2006 as the best Swedish player .
