Bryan T. McCabe (born June 8, 1975 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach and functionary, who played 1191 games for the New York Islanders , Vancouver, between 1991 and 2011 Canucks , Chicago Blackhawks , Toronto Maple Leafs , Florida Panthers and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . McCabe celebrated numerous successes with the Canadian national team , especially on the international stage, and won a total of three world championship titles in the junior and men's division.
Career
McCabe, who played for the Medicine Hat Tigers , Spokane Chiefs and Brandon Wheat Kings during his junior years between 1991 and 1995 , began his NHL career with the New York Islanders , which made him 40 in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the second round. Selected position. In the 1997/98 season he moved to the Vancouver Canucks together with Todd Bertuzzi and a third-round suffrage in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Canucks received Trevor Linden . After one and a half seasons in New York and a brief one-year stint with the Chicago Blackhawks , he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2000 , where he played until 2008. In the 2003/04 season he finished fourth in the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the best defender in the league. Since the 2004/05 NHL season fell victim to a lockout , he completed some games for the Swedish Elitserien club HV 71 Jönköping .
The 2005/06 season , in which he played again for the Maple Leafs, was his best to date. With 68 points in 73 games he was one of the best defenders and surpassed his own record from 2003/04 (53 points in 75 games). Subsequently, he received a five-year contract with a clause according to which he could only be transferred with his consent. In the 2006/07 season he played in all 82 league games of the season and made 57 points. The following year he was unlucky with injuries and only had 54 games and 23 points. Especially after the end of the season there were numerous rumors about possible transfer deals in which McCabe should be involved, but one such was not carried out until September 2008 when McCabe and a draft pick from the Maple Leafs for Mike Van Ryn were given to the Florida Panthers .
In Florida, the defender was always set as a regular in the following three seasons and had the office of team captain from September 2009 , before McCabe in February 2011 shortly before the trade deadline in a transfer deal in exchange for Tim Kennedy and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 was submitted to the New York Rangers . After the 2010/11 season, the Canadian became a free agent and ended his playing career.
After a one-year hiatus, McCabe returned to the Florida Panthers franchise in the summer of 2012 and initially worked there for one season in the expanded coaching team. He then took over the post of Director of Player Development , before being promoted to Director of Player Personnel in the summer of 2017 after four years in this position .
International
For his home country McCabe was active in the Junior World Championships in 1995 and 1996. He was able to achieve the world championship title in the junior class in both years. At the 1997 World Cup , he repeated the success with the men. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , McCabe was actually intended as a reserve player, but moved up to the starting line-up of Canada for the injured Ed Jovanovski .
