Johannes Anglicus
Johannes Anglicus (also: English, Pyxocomiston, Leimenhans ; * 1502 in Buchsweiler ; † July 31, 1577 in Strasbourg ) was a Protestant theologian and hymn composer .
Life
Johannes Anglicus or Johann Englisch, also called "Leimenhans" by the people after his apartment in Leimgässlein in Strasbourg, was a Catholic priest. He joined the Reformation and was accepted by Matthäus Zell as an assistant at the Strasbourg Cathedral . He signed the Wittenberg Agreement with the name "Joannes Pyxocomiston" (which means "from Buxweiler"). Count Philip III. von Hanau-Lichtenberg expelled him because of his Protestant activities.
During the validity of the 1548 Augsburg interim , he preached in the Strasbourg “ New Church ”. On May 18, 1561, he held the first Protestant service in Strasbourg Cathedral since the interim. Soon afterwards he had to give way to the strict Gnesio Lutherans and spent his twilight years in involuntary retirement as a "free preacher ". The Strasbourg hymn book from 1530 contains two songs by him: "Given be God the Lord" and " In peace yours, oh my lord ", a repositioning of the Nunc dimittis . This can be found in a revised and expanded version by Friedrich Spitta to this day in hymn books: EG 222, GL 216.
