Ed Jovanovski (born June 26, 1976 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player of Macedonian descent. The defender selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1994 in first overall position completed 1204 games in the National Hockey League for the Florida Panthers , Vancouver Canucks and Phoenix Coyotes . With the Canadian national team , he won gold medals at the Olympic Games in 2002 and the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and silver medals at the World Championships in 2005 and 2008 .
Career
After a very strong season among the juniors in the WHL in his hometown with the Windsor Spitfires , the Florida Panthers won Jovanovski with their "First Overall Pick" in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft . He stayed another year in the WHL and played in the NHL from the 1995/96 season .
With the Florida Panthers he was able to prevail immediately. Thanks to his robust style of play, he kept order in front of the Panthers' goal and was quickly nicknamed "Jovocop". After the end of the season he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team along with Boston's Kyle McLaren . In Florida, too, Jovanovski was able to convince on the defensive in the coming years. When they wanted to step up the offensive in Florida in the 1998/99 season , the target of desire was Pawel Bure , and the price to be paid was Jovanovski. In addition to the two, a few other players such as Dave Gagner , Bret Hedican and Kevin Weekes were involved in the swap between the Panthers and the Vancouver Canucks .
At first it was also Jovanovski's defensive qualities with which he convinced in Vancouver, but from the 2000/01 season he was also able to convince on the offensive. There followed three seasons in which he came close to the 50 point mark. From 2001 to 2003 he was also nominated for the NHL All-Star Game .
At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , he was able to win Olympic gold with the Canadian national team.
An injury set him back after the lockout and he could only play 44 games for the Canucks, including missing out on the 2006 Olympics.
In July 2006, Jovanovski signed a five-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes that grossed him $ 32.5 million. On July 1, 2011, he signed a contract with the Florida Panthers. After the 2013/14 season he left the Panthers and subsequently ended his active career.
Ed Jovanovski's parents immigrated to Canada from Macedonia . In 2005 the documentary "The Late Bloomer: Ed Jovanovski" was shot about his life.
