Career

Kevin Weekes, one of the few colored ice hockey players, was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the second round by the Florida Panthers at position 41. Weekes played two years in the Ontario Hockey League before he moved to the AHL for the Panthers farm team , where he completed two seasons. In 1997 he went to the International Hockey League to another Florida farm team and played eleven games for the Florida Panthers in the NHL that same season.

In January 1999, Weekes was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks as part of a large swap deal together with Ed Jovanovski and Dave Gagner , who sent Pawel Bure , Bret Hedican and Brad Ference to Florida for it. He also played in the IHL with the Detroit Vipers , where he and Andrei Trefilow received the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the fewest goals conceded. In December 1999 he was transferred from Vancouver to the New York Islanders , where he was number 1 on an NHL team for the first time. But after only six months later in July 2000, Weekes moved to a transfer business for the Tampa Bay Lightnings . There he immediately took over the post as regular goalkeeper, but could not reach the play-offs with the Lightnings . In the 2001/02 season , Weekes was only number 2, as Nikolai Chabibulin had been committed to a star goalkeeper.

Shortly before the transfer ended in March 2002, Weekes moved to the Carolina Hurricanes , played two more games in the regular season and played for the first time in his career in the play-offs of the NHL. Carolina reached the final of the Stanley Cup , but had to admit defeat Detroit . Weekes played eight play-off games as Artūrs Irbe's back-up goalie and was absolutely convincing, so that he was number 1 in the 2002/03 season , but missed the play-offs. The following year it was also over after the regular season.

The contract with the Hurricanes expired in the summer of 2004 and Weekes signed a one-year contract with the New York Rangers . However, it became worthless because the NHL season was canceled due to the lockout . But in summer 2005 he signed a new three-year contract with Rangers. However, Weekes found himself again in the role of the back-up goalkeeper, as Henrik Lundqvist was number 1 in the team and Weekes only played 32 games. In the play-offs he was used against the New Jersey Devils , but could not convince with four goals against .

In the 2006/07 season he played with the Rangers as a back-up goalie from Henrik Lundqvist, but he lost this post to Stephen Valiquette during the season , as he did not show the expected performance.

He joined the New Jersey Devils in the summer of 2007 and was number two behind Martin Brodeur for the next two years . In September 2009 he declared his career over.
