Peter Lauremberg (born August 26, 1585 in Rostock ; † May 13, 1639 there ) was a versatile university professor, rector of the University of Rostock and writer of the Baroque period .

Life

Peter Lauremberg was born in Rostock as the son of Professor Wilhelm Lauremberg . Like his younger brother Johann , he had a poetic streak. Following in his father's footsteps, he studied medicine and astronomy in Rostock, where he also obtained his master's degree in 1607. In 1608 he pursued medical studies in Leiden . As a court master he traveled to Belgium and France. In 1611 Peter Lauremberg received his doctorate in medicine in Paris and accepted his first professorship, that of philosophy, at the University of Montauban. After almost three years, Peter Lauremberg left France, returned home in 1614 and accepted a position as professor of mathematics and physics at the Hamburg Academic Gymnasium . In 1624 he followed a call as professor of poetry, mathematics and medicine at the University of Rostock, where he was elected rector in 1635. Peter Lauremberg remained in Rostock until his death.

He wrote a large number of frequently published scientific textbooks in various fields of science. The 700 articles in his huge anthology of curiosities, the first of its kind in German, testify to his extensive knowledge. Lauremberg also wrote five lute pieces with dedications in the important lute and song book of his friend and later pastor Petrus Fabricius , who studied with him in Rostock.

His son Jakob Sebastian Lauremberg was later professor of history and law at the University of Rostock. His daughter Gertrud Lauremberg (1629–1705) was married from 1668 to Christian Hildebrand , professor of logic, also at Rostock University.
