Johann Lauremberg

Johann Lauremberg , also Johannes Lauremberg , occasionally wrong: Johann Wilhelm Laurenberg (born February 26, 1590 in Rostock ; † February 28, 1658 in Sorø , Denmark ) was a mathematician and cartographer as well as a Low German poet and writer of the Baroque period . As a pseudonym he used the name "Hans Willmsen L. Rost." (= Johann, son of Wilhelm Lauremberg Rostochiensis).

Life

Johann Lauremberg was the son of Rostock professor Wilhelm Lauremberg and brother of the writer Peter Lauremberg .

He studied in Rostock from 1605 and took his master's degree on November 8, 1610 . Between 1612 and 1617 he undertook educational trips to Holland , England , France and Italy , including studying medicine in Paris from 1613 to 1616 ; In 1616 he received his doctorate in medicine in Reims . From 1618 to 1623 he was professor of poetry at the University of Rostock and then until the end of his life professor of mathematics at the knight academy in Sorø . During his time in Rostock, he drew a map of Mecklenburg in 1622, which became part of the Rostock Great Atlas in 1664 .

In addition to mathematical and educational writings, Johann Lauremberg wrote a Latin tragedy , Latin and German poems, allegorical wedding comedies and Low German poems.
