Wilhelm Lauremberg

Wilhelm Lauremberg , also Laurenberg (* 1547 in Solingen ; † February 2, 1612 in Rostock ) was a German physician and mathematician and rector of the University of Rostock .

Life

Wilhelm Lauremberg was born in Solingen in 1547 "in the Bergisch near Cöln ". From 1570 he studied under David Chyträus at the University of Rostock. In addition, he was tutor to Peter Memmius . In 1581 he obtained a doctorate in philosophy and married Johanna Longolia, a stepdaughter of Peter Memmius. In the same year he became a council professor of medicine and city ​​physician in Rostock as the successor to Memmius, who had accepted the office of city physician in Lübeck .

In 1587 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD and practiced as a doctor. Queen Sophie of Denmark was one of his patients . From 1594 he was ducal full professor of medicine and higher mathematics. He took over the office from the late Heinrich Brucaeus and held it until his death, when he was succeeded by Jacob Faber . From 1584 to 1611 he served as rector of the university several times . He was also dean of the medical faculty in 1594 and 1606. From 1594 Heinrich Pauli took over the office of the city physician .

His children were:

  • Peter Lauremberg (1585–1639), university professor, rector of the University of Rostock and writer
  • Conrad Lauremberg (1585 – after 1627), sub-principal at the cathedral school in Schwerin and pastor in Alt Bukow
  • Katharina Lauremberg (1587–1651) was married from 1604 to Eilhard Lubin , theologian, philosopher and mathematician at the University of Rostock.
  • Johann Lauremberg (1590–1658), mathematician, cartographer and Low German poet
  • Wilhelm Lauremberg (the Younger) (* 1598), medic and botanist.
