Georg Friedrich August Blanck (born January 14, 1823 in Wrechen , † December 16, 1890 in Schwerin ) was a German physician and non-fiction author.

Life

August Blanck was born as the son of the landowner on Wrechen near Woldegk in Mecklenburg-Strelitz , Carl (Christian) Blanck (later landowner on Lanken near Lübz ).

Blanck attended the cathedral school in Güstrow , passed the Abitur at Easter 1846 and then completed a medical degree at the universities of Göttingen, Berlin, Rostock, Prague and Vienna. In 1853 he received his doctorate at the University of Rostock with the inaugural dissertation "About Intussusceptio" and then initially worked as a military assistant doctor in Schwerin and Ludwigslust.

From July 1859 he was medical officer in Schwerin, from June 1864 senior medical officer. In October 1867 he said goodbye to military service and continued to work as a general practitioner in Schwerin. In 1872 he became a member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology . In 1874 he was honored with the Gold Cross of Merit of the Wendish Crown House Order .

Blanck was also the librarian of the Hennemann Foundation , one of the widow of the Schwerin secret medical councilor Dr. Wilhelm Hennemann (1786–1843) had a foundation for the use of the deceased's extensive private library by the Schwerin doctors. In addition to his practical work, he was interested in the Mecklenburg flora and fauna, on which he wrote books. His biographical collection “The Mecklenburg Doctors from the Oldest Times to the Present”, published in 1874, is particularly well known and is still widely cited today. This fundamental work was subsequently published in 1901 by Axel Wilhelmi as a complete continuation and new edition and in 1929 by Gustav Willgeroth - "supplemented by genealogical averages and continued to the present day".

August Blanck remained unmarried. He died shortly before the age of 68.

Quote from a review by Friedrich Stuhr on the new edition published by Gustav Willgeroth in 1929:

“All in all, Willgeroth's medical book is worthy of the three-volume pastor's work published in 1924-25. There are few German states from which such rich genealogical material about the members of these two important professions is available as from Mecklenburg. "
