Heinrich Brucaeus

Heinrich Brucaeus , also Heinrich van den Brock , sometimes incorrectly Heinrich Brucaeus von Aalst (* 1530 in Aalst, Flanders , † January 4, 1593 in Rostock ) was a German physician , astronomer and mathematician .

Life

Heinrich Brucaeus was born in Flanders in 1530 as the son of councilor Gerhard van den Brock. In schools and universities in Ghent , Paris and Bologna he was represented, studied medicine and philosophy and was at the University of Paris to the doctor these two disciplines doctorate . He then worked as a lecturer at the University of Leuven .

He worked as a mathematics professor at the University of Rome . In 1565 he was employed as the personal physician of Maria von Braganza , in 1567 he switched to the University of Rostock as professor of medicine and astronomy . This happened even though he was Catholic. In 1569, 1575, 1581 and 1587 he was the rector of the university . In addition, from 1571 he was the personal physician of the Duke of Mecklenburg .

Brucaeus held the professorship until his death on January 4, 1593. Shortly before, he professed Lutheranism .

Karl Krause calls Brucaeus a "skillful, very sought-after doctor" and an "enormously learned mathematician" . Brucaeus knew the work of Nicolaus Copernicus , whom he held as a mathematician with great respect. Tycho Brahe probably got to know the heliocentric view of the world through Brucaeus during his studies at the University of Rostock . Nevertheless, Brucaeus rejected this system according to the unanimous opinion of his time.
