Stephen "Steve" Valiquette (born August 20, 1977 in Etobicoke , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was last until July 2012 with the HC Valpellice Bulldogs in Serie A under contract.

Career

The 1.98 m tall goalie began his professional career with the Sudbury Wolves in the Canadian Junior League OHL , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft as 190th in the eighth round of the Los Angeles Kings .

After another year in the OHL, which he spent towards the end with the Erie Otters , he was once on the ice for the Lowell Lock Monsters in the American Hockey League . After serving with various farm teams in lower-class leagues, he completed his first NHL missions for the New York Islanders in the 1999/00 season . At that point, he was the greatest ice hockey goalkeeper to have played an NHL game to date. Most of the time Valiquette spent in the American Hockey League, however, this did not change after his move to the Edmonton Oilers . During the 2003/04 season , the Canadian was transferred to the New York Rangers , who initially used him mainly for the Hartford Wolf Pack , their farm team in the AHL.

The lockout in the 2004/05 season spent Valiquette at the Russian first division club Lokomotive Yaroslavl , where he was regularly between the posts. On March 3, 2007, the left catcher achieved his first victory in three years to date in the highest North American professional league. With the departure of the previous back-up goalkeeper Kevin Weekes to the New Jersey Devils , Stephen Valiquette became the substitute goalkeeper for the New York Rangers. On January 31, 2008 he managed his first shutout in the NHL against the Philadelphia Flyers , the second followed a few days later in a 2-0 against the same opponent.

In summer 2010 Valiquette was signed by HK CSKA Moscow for one year . After the Russians did not renew his contract after the 2010/11 season , the Canadian was without a club for some time. In November 2011 it was announced that he was going to become a volunteer goalkeeper coach for the university team of Quinnipiac University , but a few days later the Canadian signed a contract with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the American Hockey League , which was replaced at short notice due to a shortage of staff in the goalkeeping position required. Without an assignment there, he moved to Europe in December 2011, where he joined the HC Valpellice Bulldogs from the Italian Serie A and ended the 2011/12 season with a total of 15 games. In July 2012, Valiquette initially signed a contract with Djurgårdens IF , but decided a short time later to end his active career.
