Antonio Jason LaBarbera (born January 18, 1980 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . He completed 187 games in the National Hockey League , mainly for the Los Angeles Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes , and also received various personal awards in the American Hockey League .
Career
Jason LaBarbera began his career in 1996 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Portland Winter Hawks . In the summer of 1998 he was selected by the New York Rangers in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the third round at position 66. He played two years in the WHL before moving to the NHL .
In October 2000 he came for the first time for the Rangers, but only for ten minutes. He then played in the East Coast Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers and in the American Hockey League for the Hartford Wolf Pack , both farm teams of the Rangers. But he played most of the time in Hartford. In 2004 he was named the best goalkeeper and most valuable player (MVP) of the AHL. The following year he received the trophy for the lowest goal average in the league.
It was not until November 2003 that he played his second NHL game and had three more to follow during the season. In the summer of 2004 his contract in New York ran out, but he got a new one with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL.
In the fall of 2005, he signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings . He completed the season as Mathieu Garon's back-up match , was used 29 times and made his first NHL shutout in the last game of the season . It was also the last game in the career of Luc Robitaille , one of the greats in the Kings team.
For the 2006/07 season Los Angeles signed Dan Cloutier another experienced goalkeeper and LaBarbera had to go to the AHL to the Manchester Monarchs , the Kings farm team, where he was the goalkeeper. In Manchester he developed into a very strong backing and at the end of the season again received the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for the best goalkeeper of the season, as well as the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the fewest goals against.
From 2009 he played for the Phoenix Coyotes . In July 2013 LaBarbera signed a one year contract with the Edmonton Oilers . In November 2013, LaBarbera was then placed on the waiver to then transfer it to the Oklahoma City Barons , the Oilers' AHL farm team. In December 2013 he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks . In early July 2014, LaBarbera signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks . This was not extended in the episode, so LaBarbera joined the Philadelphia Flyers and played there for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms until the end of the season.
After the 2015/16 season, LaBarbera announced the end of his active career and moved to the coaching staff of the Calgary Hitmen from the Western Hockey League , where he now works as a goalkeeping coach.
Records
- Jason LaBarbera set a new AHL record on February 13, 2004 with his tenth shutout in the 2003/04 season . During the rest of the season, he was able to expand his record to 13 shutouts.
