Mathieu Carol Garon (born January 9, 1978 in Chandler , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played 343 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Los Angeles Kings , Edmonton Oilers , Pittsburgh Penguins , Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning has played in the National Hockey League . With the Pittsburgh Penguins he won the Stanley Cup in 2009 .

Career

Mathieu Garon began his career in 1995 in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec with the Tigres de Victoriaville . He made it straight to the goalkeeper and was awarded the Trophée Raymond Lagacé as the best rookie in a defensive position. During the NHL Entry Draft 1996 he was selected by the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League in the second round at a total of 44th position.

Garon played in the LHJMQ until 1998 when he was named the league's top goalkeeper before joining the Fredericton Canadiens , the Canadiens de Montréal's farm team at the time . For the 1999/2000 season , the team moved to Québec City and henceforth called Citadelles de Québec . Garon remained a regular goalkeeper for the American Hockey League team and came in 2000 for the first time for Montréal in the National Hockey League. Nevertheless, in the following years he played almost exclusively in the AHL for the farm teams of Montréal. From 2000 to 2004 he only played 43 games in the NHL.

In the summer of 2004 Garon was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings , but his debut in California was delayed because the 2004/05 season was canceled due to the lockout . Garon played for the Manchester Monarchs in the AHL. During the 2005/06 season he was the goalkeeper of the Los Angeles Kings, but narrowly missed participation in the playoffs . In the summer of 2006, his contract was extended by one year. With Dan Cloutier , an experienced competitor came into the team, but he was able to prevail, but Garon injured himself several times during the season and therefore had to pause several games. Los Angeles missed the playoffs again.

The Kings decided in the summer of 2007 not to renew Garon's contract and so he signed a two-year contract for $ 2.2 million with the Edmonton Oilers . During the 2007/08 season Garon ousted the Oilers goalkeeper Dwayne Roloson . Among other things, Garon contributed to a new NHL record of 13 won shootouts , in which he put down a perfect series of 10-0 shootouts and held 30 of 32 shots on goal. Garon was injured towards the end of the season and could not support the Oilers in the fight for a playoff spot.

In the 2008-09 season , Garon played in just 15 games for the Oilers, of which he won six and lost eight. Dwayne Roloson prevailed as a regular goalkeeper and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers achieved better results. Three goalkeepers limited the Oilers' options too much, which is why Garon was exchanged for Dany Sabourin , Ryan Stone and a four-round suffrage in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft from Pittsburgh Penguins . In the Penguins, he acted as a replacement for Marc-André Fleury and celebrated with the team at the end of the season, winning the Stanley Cup .

Immediately after the success, Garon signed a contract as a free agent with the Columbus Blue Jackets in July 2009 , where he made 71 missions in two years as a back-up for Steve Mason . On July 1, 2011 Garon signed - again as a free agent - a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning . This contract expired two years later and Garon took part in the Los Angeles Kings training camp in September 2013, but could not recommend himself for a contract. In October 2013 he was signed by HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League to replace Teemu Lassila , but released on January 1, 2014 due to a new injury. In May 2014, the 36-year-old finally announced his retirement from professional sports.

International

For his home country Garon played at the Junior World Championship in 1998 , but where the Canadian team finished only eighth. For the men's selection, the goalkeeper was part of the team at the 2008 World Cup that won the silver medal. Behind the regular goalkeepers Cam Ward and Pascal Leclaire Garon remained without minutes.
