Dany Sabourin (born September 2, 1980 in Val-d'Or , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the EC Graz 99ers in the Austrian Ice Hockey League (EBEL) since summer 2013 .
Career
Dany Sabourin began his career in 1997 with the Faucons de Sherbrooke in the Canadian Junior League LHJMQ . After his first season he was selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round at position 108. Sabourin stayed for two more years with the Castors de Sherbrooke , the successor to the Faucons, but in the 1998/99 season also worked for the Saint John Flames , the Calgary farm team , in the playoffs of the American Hockey League .
In 2000 Sabourin finally switched to the pros and completed the following two years mainly with the Johnstown Chiefs in the East Coast Hockey League . For the 2002/03 season he was back in the squad Saint John Flames and a year later he came to his first four appearances in the NHL for the Calgary Flames, but continued to play for the farm teams in the ECHL and the AHL.
While the NHL season 2004/05 was canceled because of the lockout , Sabourin played for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL and the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL, both farm teams of the Pittsburgh Penguins . He performed very well with both teams, which is why the Pittsburgh Penguins finally signed him in the summer of 2005. However, Sabourin could not prevail in the NHL squad and was instead the goalkeeper of the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL. In this position he led the team in 49 missions to 30 wins and at the end of the season he received the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for the best goalkeeper in the league and the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the fewest goals conceded.
However, the Pittsburgh Penguins found no use for him and put him on the waiver list shortly before the start of the 2006/07 season , from where the Vancouver Canucks signed him . Sabourin took the post of substitute goalkeeper behind Roberto Luongo and was allowed on the ice nine times during the season. However, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007 and he went back to Pittsburgh.
In Pittsburgh, Sabourin was finally able to recommend himself for the NHL squad and became number two behind goalkeeper Marc-André Fleury . Sabourin was able to convince with good performances and took the post of goalkeeper in December 2007 when Fleury was out for a long time due to injury.
In January 2009 Sabourin was exchanged for Mathieu Garon by the Oilers and then immediately put on the waiver list, as no third goalkeeper was needed after Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers . Sabourin agreed to a move to the farm team, the Springfield Falcons from the AHL.
Sabourin has been under contract with the Graz 99ers in Austria since the 2013/14 season, where he replaced Frédéric Cloutier as the first goalkeeper.
