Frédéric Cloutier (born May 14, 1981 in Saint-Honoré-de-Shenley , Québec ) is an Italo - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Asiago Hockey in the Alps Hockey League and Italian Hockey League since December 2019 . His uncle Norm Gratton was also active as a professional ice hockey player, playing in the National Hockey League in the 1970s ; likewise his brother Gilles Gratton , who also made it into the NHL as a goalkeeper.

Career

Cloutier began his career in the Canadian Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , where Acadie-Bathurst Titan had drawn him in the sixth round of the 1998 QMJHL Entry Draft as the 84th player, before making the leap into professional ice hockey in 2001 the ECHL changed. He reached a first high point in the 2001/02 season , in which he won several league awards and showed excellent performances. He also spent the following years in the North American minor leagues, changing teams several times, but he was never drafted and did not complete a single game in the NHL .

With the 2007/08 season Cloutier moved to Europe for the first time and served as the first goalkeeper for the Italian first division club Ritten Sport for four years , with whom he also reached the finals three times, but never managed to win the title, although he was among the top goalkeepers every year was found. After a short stay in Canada, the Austrian Graz 99ers signed him during the 2011/12 season , where he took over the role of Fabian Weinhandl's first goalkeeper . Cloutier convinced with good performances, so that his contract was extended after the end of the season. For the 2013/14 season , the Canadian signed a two-month contract with Starbulls Rosenheim in DEL2 , where he replaced the injured Pasi Häkkinen . After his recovery, he moved to league rivals Bietigheim Steelers . For the 2014/15 season , Cloutier left Germany for Mestis in Finland , where he has been putting on his skates for KooKoo ever since . In his first year there, he contributed with the best Mestis catch quota to promote his club to the Liiga , the top Finnish league. After a year in the Liiga, Cloutier left Finland in 2016 and was signed by Asiago Hockey from Serie A. In parallel to the game in the Italian championship, Asiago takes part in the Alps Hockey League , whose championship Cloutier won in 2018 with the club. In 2020 he won the Italian championship.

International

In 2010, Cloutier was appointed to the Canadian national team by head coach Mark Messier , with whom he was the first goalkeeper to appear at the Spengler Cup .

Since his marriage to an Italian, he also has Italian citizenship and is therefore eligible to play for the Italian national team. In April 2016 he contested the Division I World Championship with this . The rise to the top division succeeded.
