The Louisiana IceGators were an American ice hockey franchise based in Lafayette , Louisiana . The IceGators' venue was the cajundome .

history

The franchise was founded in 1995 and began playing in the East Coast Hockey League . Head coach was Doug Shedden , who played in his playing career in the NHL. Already in their first season the IceGators reached the play-offs after winning the South Division with 92 points in the regular season. In the first round of the play-offs, the IceGators were narrowly defeated by the Jacksonville Lizard Kings . Also in the following season the qualification for the finals succeeded, in which the IceGators successively defeated the Mobile Mysticks , Birmingham Bulls and Peoria Rivermen and made it into the finals of the Kelly Cup . The IceGators lost to the South Carolina Stingrays in five games.

In the following years the team could constantly qualify for the play-offs, but only in the 1999/00 season Louisiana succeeded again in the finals, in which they were subject to the Peoria Rivermen in six games . In the 2001/02 season, the Louisiana IceGators achieved 116 points, the highest ever score in ECHL history, thus winning the Henry Brabham Cup . The IceGators were then defeated in the second play-off round against the Jackson Bandits in five games. In the final season of the 2004/05 franchise, the IceGators played their worst season, with the team only reaching 58 points and clearly missing the play-offs. That was the only time that the IceGators couldn't qualify for the play-offs. In recent years, the number of viewers at the IceGators has declined, which is why the franchise had to be dissolved due to financial problems in January 2006 after no investors could be found.
